Rehabilitation of HIV/AIDS Victims

Maiti Nepal has established a "Hospice" called "Sneha Griha"-Home of Affection-at-
Sattighatta in Jhapa district, East Nepal to rehabilitate returned trafficked girls and
women infected with HIV/AIDS. The Hospice, in Jyamirghadi Village Development
Committee, occupies an area of 8.15 acres. The Hospice, with its own clinic, was
completed in 1999.
Maiti Nepal has provided shelter to girls and women
infected with various sexually transmitted diseases
including HIV/AIDS. The chances of these patients
recovering through available medical treatment are
very low. Therefore, Maiti Nepal established a
hospice to provide a separate shelter and proper
care for these victims. Many returned trafficked
girls and women, who were enticed with various
promises by pimps, are suffering from fatal
illnesses like AIDS, hepatitis, and other sexually
transmitted diseases. It is quite difficult to rehab-
ilitate these girls and women in society, or with
their families. Society does not accept them easily.
Maiti Nepal felt the need for a separate rehab-
ilitation center to provide these girls and women
with a permanent shelter, proper care and medical
treatment, and therefore established
"Sneha Griha."
The Hospice can accommodate 60 persons. There are six recuperation rooms for the
residents. Maiti Nepal has bought another 8.15 acres of land adjacent to the Hospice.
The residents of the Hospice use this land to grow vegetables, thus making them self-
reliant. There is also a pond for fish farming. Maiti Nepal does everything possible to
make the residents feel at home. Besides this, Maiti Nepal conducts various skill
oriented training programs for the residents. The Hospice was established at a cost
of Rs. 250,000. There is a Primary Health Care Center at the Hospice that was
established to provide limited but immediate medical attention to the Hospice residents,
as well as to provide simple and affordable basic health services to the local people.
