Rescue and Rehabilitation

Since its inception, Maiti Nepal is actively involved in repatriating to Nepal trafficked
Nepali girls and women from Indian brothels, and in rehabilitating them. Maiti Nepal
takes full responsibility for these survivors. Maiti Nepal does not free itself of its
responsibilities by returning the girls and women to their respective guardians.
Maiti Nepal not only provides the girls and women with shelter and food, but also

with voluntary medical check-ups,
counseling, and necessary medical
treatment. Maiti Nepal also helps to
identify the survivors' parents/guardians,
conducts searches for the traffickers,
and initiates legal proceedings to file cases
against the traffickers. Maiti Nepal does
not simply hand-over the returned girls and
women to their guardians even if the
guardians want to take them back.

Maiti Nepal sends the girls and women
with their respective guardians only if the
girls and women are not at risk of being

trafficked again, and that the environment in their homes are satisfactory. Otherwise,
Maiti Nepal rehabilitates these girls and women in its own offices. Maiti Nepal has
established a shelter and rehabilitation home at Gaushala in Kathmandu for the
survivors. This shelter has a capacity of rehabilitating 250 girls and women.

In the course of rehabilitation, the girls and women are given various income-generating
skill training. Awareness programs are also conducted for them. There are more than
200 girls and women in the shelter and rehabilitation home of Maiti Nepal. Maiti Nepal
also rescues and provides shelter for victims of domestic violence and destitute women.
Maiti Nepal provides free legal assistance to women who have been denied justice.
